SUMMARY:Forest of Bowland - field visit. Leaders: Nigel Price and Paul Kabrna
DESCRIPTION:Purpose: To examine sedimentary rocks and structures in the Carboniferous age rocks of the Bowland sub-Basin (part of the more extensive\, Craven Basin) The rocks vary with shales\, mudstone\, siltstones\, limestones and sandstone belonging to the Craven and Millstone Grit Groups all being exposed. Fossils are abundant in some beds and there is also evidence of mining for galena and sphalerite. The rocks were deformed during the Variscan Orogeny and lie within the Ribblesdale Fold belt\, a series of NE -SW trending anticlines. \nMeeting time and place: 10.30 a.m. at Langden Brook (SD 632 512) where there is roadside parking. \nLocations to be visited and type of walking: ‘Easy walking’ \nAnticipated time of finish: Between 3.30 and 4pm \nPublic toilets available: Dunsop Bridge (SD 660 501) \nSpecial recommendations for clothing/equipment: Hard hats & High-viz jackets for Sykes Quarry.
