DESCRIPTION:Rosie Lewis\, SEE\, University of Leeds. \n \nThe Soufrière Hills volcano releases around 440 tonnes of sulphur dioxide (SO₂) gas every day\, while ash deposits from past eruptions (1999-2011) are regularly disturbed by ash mining activities. This talk will present the first high-resolution study of how volcanic SO₂ and fine particles (PM2.5) are dispersed across the island\, leading to different levels of exposure in local communities. This research aims to help local authorities better understand their air quality\, assess potential health risks\, and explore the need for long-term monitoring. Rosie will share insights and photographs from her field expeditions to Montserrat\, offering a glimpse into the unique challenges of working around this active volcano.

Speaker: Tom Berry\, Tunnelling and Ground Engineering\, Jacobs Ltd. \nAlmost all areas of the UK have been affected by periglaciation during the Quaternary and\, as such\, relict periglacial geohazards can provide a significant technical and commercial risk for many civil engineering projects. The processes and products associated with periglaciation in the relict periglacial landscape of the UK are described in terms of their nature and distribution\, the hazards they pose to engineering projects\, and how they might be monitored and mitigated. A periglacial land systems classification is applied here to show its application to the assessment of ground engineering hazards within upland and lowland periglacial geomorphological terrains. Techniques for the early identification of the susceptibility of a site to periglacial geohazards are discussed. These include the increased availability of high-resolution aerial imagery such as Google Earth\, which has proved to be a valuable tool in periglacial geohazard identification when considered in conjunction with the more usual sources of desk study information such as geological\, geomorphological and topographical publications. Descriptions of periglacial geohazards and how they might impact engineering works are presented\, along with suggestions for possible monitoring and remediation strategies.

DESCRIPTION:Seawater chemistry and mass extinctions \nSpeaker: Dr Rob Newton\, School of Earth and Environment\, University of Leeds. \nAn image of a Sabkha environment from the middle east where we have modern day deposition of gypsum: Changes in the deposition of gypsum from the ocean through time play an important role in the story. \nThere are various lines of evidence that show that seawater chemistry has changed markedly through time\, but these records have multiple limitations and are generally have very low time resolution\, often with gaps of many millions of years. More recent approaches for a specific component of seawater\, sulphate\, establish a link between low concentrations of this ion and mid-Phanerozoic extinctions such as the Permo-Triassic and end-Triassic. Rob will explain the possible mechanism that links these phenomena which fits with the established framework of other correlations between ocean anoxia\, large igneous province volcanism and marine extinction\, based on carbon cycling in the oceans and marine sediments\, and particularly the generation of methane.

DESCRIPTION:Purpose: To examine sedimentary rocks and structures in the Carboniferous age rocks of the Bowland sub-Basin (part of the more extensive\, Craven Basin) The rocks vary with shales\, mudstone\, siltstones\, limestones and sandstone belonging to the Craven and Millstone Grit Groups all being exposed. Fossils are abundant in some beds and there is also evidence of mining for galena and sphalerite. DESCRIPTION:Volcan Fuego de Colima (Mexico): Volcanological\, petrological & geochemical monitoring of the\nmost active volcano in North America. \nDr.Ivan Savov\, School of Earth and Environment\, University of Leeds. \n \nThe aim of my talk will be to introduce the geology and volcanology of young (Holocene) lavas and ash (tephra) deposits from the large Colima Volcanic Complex (CVC) in Western Mexico. I will be emphasising the chronological\, petrological and geochemical evolution of the currently active vent of Volcano Fuego de Colima (Mexico). The CVC has experienced numerous sub-Plinian to Plinian eruptions (better-known 1980 eruption of Mt.St.Helens in the USA or 1991 eruption of Pinatubo in the Philippines). CVC also developed at least 12 large calderas\, and produced the largest debris avalanche deposit on Earth. Many of these eruptions resulted in extensive ashfalls across vast areas of Mexico and beyond. Ashfall is a major volcanic hazard as it is causes roof and building collapse\, respiratory problems to humans and animals\, contaminates water supplies\, and causing widespread economic losses to the aviation industry. Importantly\, over the last couple of decades\, my collaborators and I have made a great progress in deciphering the Holocene eruptive history of this very active and highly explosive large stratovolcano. Some tantalising insights have come to light and we think those will be rather useful for future volcano monitoring and realistic hazard assessment of this dangerous andesitic volcano. \nPLEASE NOTE NEW VENUE: \nThe meeting will take place in the Maurice Keyworth Building (Lecture Theatre G.02) which\, due to the unavailability of the Michael Sadler\, will be our new venue for the foreseeable future. \nUntil we have used the venue\, we are not sure if we will be able to provide refreshments after talks. \nHow to get to the Maurice Keyworth Building: \nThe Maurice Keyworth Building (which some will know as the old Leeds Grammar School) is part of the Leeds University Business School and is found on the Western Campus which is on the west side of Clarendon Road opposite to the main campus. On entering the building go past reception and the lecture theatre (G.02) is on the left. \nMaurice Keyworth is about a 5–10 -minute walk from our old venue in the Michael Sadler Building but\, if travelling by car\, instead of using the Orange Zone parking\, there is the possibility of parking closer on surrounding roads. These are: \nLyddon Terrace: Although surrounded by university buildings\, is a public road and has no parking restrictions. It is accessed off Clarendon Road via University Road\, turning right before the barrier. DESCRIPTION:Recent Sea level Change\nDr Graham Rush\, Research Fellow\, School of Earth and Environment\, University of Leeds \n  \nDuring deglaciations melting ice sheets cause a global mean sea-level rise. However\, sea-level rise is not even across the oceans. Some regions experience a greater than average rise and others experience less\, or even a sea-level fall\, dependent on the source of the melting ice. Due to its position relative to the major ice sheets\, the rate and magnitude of sea-level change in the North Sea is particularly sensitive to the location of melting ice. In this talk I will discuss the processes that cause this pattern of uneven sea-level change. I will subsequently present sea-level reconstructions from the North Sea basin for two different time periods during the Quaternary and discuss how these sea-level reconstructions make it possible to locate the source of the melting ice at specific time periods and how this in turn enables us to better understand the future stability of ice sheets and also the climate/ocean response to melting ice sheets. \n  \nPLEASE NOTE NEW VENUE: \nThe meeting will take place in the Maurice Keyworth Building (Lecture Theatre G.02) which\, due to the unavailability of the Michael Sadler\, will be our new venue for the foreseeable future. \nUntil we have used the venue\, we are not sure if we will be able to provide refreshments after talks. \nHow to get to the Maurice Keyworth Building: \nThe Maurice Keyworth Building (which some will know as the old Leeds Grammar School) is part of the Leeds University Business School and is found on the Western Campus which is on the west side of Clarendon Road opposite to the main campus. DESCRIPTION:The Oklo natural nuclear reactors\nDr Gareth Martin\, Leeds Geological Association \n \nGeology has many weird and wonderful curiosities\, probably none more so than the Oklo natural nuclear reactors. Back in December 1942 humans created what was then thought to be the first controlled nuclear chain reaction on Earth. This thought persisted until 1972 when some unusual measurements in the concentration of uranium extracted from a uranium mine in the Gabon\, Africa was identified at a reprocessing plant in France. Initially\, it was thought that the uranium had been stolen but some scientific investigations and old hypotheses led to an amazing discovery which showed that nature beat us to controlled fission reactions by 1.9 billion years. DESCRIPTION:The Origin and early evolution of land plants \nDr Charles Wellman\, School of Biosciences\, University of Sheffield \n \nThe origin of land plants was one of the most important events in the history of life on Earth. It is of immense evolutionary significance as it represents the origin of one of the three kingdoms of multicellular life. It is also significant in terms of the environment of planet Earth\, as the origin and subsequent evolution of terrestrial vegetation had profound influence on biogeochemical cycles\, effecting atmospheric composition and climate\, patterns of weathering\, erosion and sedimentation\, soil formation etc. In view of its overwhelming significance\, research into the origin and early evolution of land plants has been a long standing scientific concern. It embraces many fields including the study of extant plants\, fossil plants and past environments. This talk will consider the fossil record of the earliest land plants. It will summarize our current understanding of the ‘invasion of the land by plants’ based on a consideration of a number of exceptionally preserved biotas. SUMMARY:The geological evolution of natural resources in Yorkshire - what contribution to the energy transition?\, Nick Shaw
DESCRIPTION:Its over 200 years since William Smith and his nephew John Phillips started to document the lay of the land and publish geological maps. However\, before that the Romans and later the monks\, miners and canal builders had used their knowledge and experience to develop the natural resources of the region. In addition\, gentleman geologists\, then academics and industrial scientists have built-up our knowledge. In 1974 the Yorkshire Geological Society published the classic “The geology and mineral resources of Yorkshire” edited by Rayner and Hemingway. In the intervening period and up till present day\, many new insights and understandings have developed in geology\, how the earth works and how human activity has influenced the planet’s climate\, including recognition of the Anthropocene. More recently the coal mining industry has closed-down and onshore hydrocarbon exploration and production has had a limited purchase\, and even less social acceptance.  \nDespite the relatively gentle stratal dips to the south-east or east\, the geological history of Yorkshire is punctuated by three major unconformities which record the major phases of development. There is an underlying tectonic fabric which controls the basin development and sediment provenance\, focus of heat flow\, thermal maturity\, mineralization and fluid movements. Recent studies indicate that the opening of the Atlantic and associated igneous doming and dykes has helped shaped the outcrop pattern\, including the offshore. \nCoal\, iron\, lead\, zinc\, salt and hydrocarbon deposits have long been developed. Now\, some of these legacy industrial assets might even be repurposed as sources of geothermal heat and/or storage\, seasonal gas storage\, sequestration of CO2 or nuclear waste repositories.  \nPerhaps it’s time to rethink our approach to natural resources and see what contribution to the energy transition it is possible for them to make? \nJoining instructions: \nNon-members are welcome to join the talk\, which will be delivered via Microsoft Teams.
