Excursion Details
Sunday 13th May 2012   —   Mineralisation in Teesdale & the Whin Sill

Leader: Dr Brian Young, Hon Research Fellow, Durham University.


The day will concentrate on aspects of the geology of the Great Whin Sill in Upper Teesdale. We will examine its structural and stratigraphical relationships in the context of the geology of the Alston Block. Particular attention will be paid to well-developed, and largely un-described, metamorphic features in the Lower Carboniferous rocks on the roof of the intrusion, including a recently discovered suite of iron-rich skarn deposits. There will be scope to debate the origins of this mineralisation and its timing and possible relationship with the main Northern Pennine mineralisation. Cronkley Fell is a superb viewpoint from which many important geological and landscape features across a wide area of the Northern Pennines may be seen and interpreted, assuming we enjoy clear visibility. The whole of the day will be spent on the Upper Teesdale - Moorhouse National Nature Reserve where the close relationship between bedrock geology and the unique Teesdale flora can be clearly appreciated. There will be excellent opportunities to see a number of the beautiful alpine plants for which the area is famous.

Thurs 17th May 2012 — Upton Railway Cutting & South Elmsall Quarry

Leader: Alison Tymon, West Yorkshire Geology Trust, and Rick Ramsdale.


To examine Upper Carboniferous and Permian rocks close at hand, to see how the landscape reflects the rock types and to consider the geological industrial heritage. Initially there will be a short walk with Alison over level ground around Upton Country Park to see the Permo-Carboniferous unconformity, recently excavated in the disused railway cutting. We then move on to examine, with Rick, stromatolites of the Permian Cadeby Formation at South Elmsall, now a SSSI.

Saturday 16th June 2012 — Park Wall North Surface Mine & Weardale

Leader: Tony Benfield, Geocourses & BGS (retired); Kevin Glasper (Assistant Site Manager) and Alan Ashburn (Geologist), both of UK Coal.


In the morning we will view working coal faces at Park Wall North Surface Mine in the west of the Durham Coalfield. The site exploits seams between the Brockwall up to the Harvey seam within the Pennine Lower Coal Measures Formation. This is a coal measures sequence which the Association has never had the opportunity of visiting in the past. The site is traversed by a number of faults which should be plainly visible in the opencast workings. It may be possible to see evidence of earlier pillar and stall workings, now exposed, with the pillars being removed.

In the afternoon, immediately following the visit to the Surface Mine and depending on the time available, Tony Benfield will show us one or both of the following sites:
  1. Harehope Quarry, Frosterley (NZ037 363) - to examine the Frosterley Marble band in the Great Limestone Member of the Alston Formation of the Yoredale Group. This has superbly preserved corals and is famous for its use as an ornamental stone, as in Durham Cathedral. Walking of no more than 2km on tracks and footpaths, sometimes rough and uneven.

  2. West Rigg Quarries, Near Westgate (NY910 391) - disused opencast ironstone workings in the Great Limestone Member in which is exposed Slitt Vein, as a vertical rib, the longest known single vein in the North Pennines. This was worked for galena between 1818 and 1880. Walking of no more than 2km over uneven ground.

Sunday 8th July 2012   —   North-West Charnwood Forest

We will look at Charnian building stones used in Mt St Bernard Abbey and beds of Tuff exposed near to the Abbey. At Charnwood Lodge: 'Bomb rocks' of Charnwood Lodge Volcanic Formation. Early interpretation of this exposure was one of volcanic bombs but during recent work by BGS, it was reinterpreted as a volcanic breccia debris flow. Grimley Andesite at High Tor Farm - part of Whitwick Volcanic Complex. At Warren Hills: Grimley Andesite and volcanic breccia. Tuffs and breccias of the Charnwood Lodge Volcanic Formation and tuffaceous sandstones of overlying Bradgate Formation. At Bardon Hill: Rocks of the Bardon Hill Volcanic Complex, including andesite breccia, volcaniclastic sandstones, Bardon Breccia. At the top of the hill, there are fine views over Bardon Quarry where you can see the spectacular unconformity with the Triassic Mercia Mudstone Group.

Sunday 5th August 2012   —   Grange Top Quarry, Ketton, Rutland

Leader: Peter del Strother MBE, Manchester GA.


Following on from the lecture on Thursday May 3rd this visit will examine extensive outcrops of Middle Jurassic strata in Ketton quarry. The succession is continuously exposed from the Northampton Sand Ironstone to Kellaways Formation. A small exposure of the junction between the Lias and the Northampton Sand Ironstone can also be seen when the water table is low.

Geology: Jurassic.

There is a paper by John Hudson, of Leicester University, who spent many years studying this site and visiting it with undergraduates. The Middle Jurassic Succession at Ketton, Rutland. HUDSON, J. D. & CLEMENTS, R. G. 2007. This proposes a different bed numbering scheme in the Rutland Formation from that of earlier workers. The earlier numbering scheme is used by the leader.

Fri 7th Sept - Sun 9th Sept 2012    —    Residential Weekend: Lleyn Peninsula

15 September 2012   —   Wharfe Valley and Blubberhouses Quarry

Leader: Gareth Jenkins and Dr Tim Kearsey, both of the British Geological Survey.


In the morning we will examine the Pendleside Limestone and associated mudstones (Dinantian in age) in the core of the Skipton Anticline under Bolton Abbey, and the sandstone succession in Namurian Worley Wise Grit exposures in the Wharfe Valley. In the afternoon an examination will be made of landslide hazards along the A59 at Blubberhouses. There will also be a discussion of the sandstone succession in exposures of the Marchup Grit (Namurian) adjacent to the A59 and in the Blubberhouses Silica Quarry.

Sat 13 October 2012     —     Giant Bedforms in the Millstone Grit

Leader: Jochem Bijkerk, Postgraduate Student, School of Earth and Environment, Leeds University.


During the lecture on Thursday 11th October Jochem will explain the Pendleian (base Namurian) evolution of the Craven-Bowland Basin during which it was initially infilled by a thick succession of turbidites (Pendle Grit) and a successive fluvio-deltaic succession (Warley Wise Grit). During this field trip he intends to demonstrate key aspects of this story with two accessible quarries.

Witshaw Bank Quarry below Embsay Crag forms a small turbidite channel of the Pendle Grit and is overlain by the fluvio-deltaic succession that can be seen from the parking area. Views on Skipton Moor at the south flank of the Skipton Anticline show slope gullies that formed during the initial stages of the Pendle Grit deposition.

Farnhill Quarry shows a Gilbert-style delta that formed as part of the incised valley fill of the Warley Wise Grit.
