To examine the Late Namurian Marsdenian Midgley Grit, Yeadonian Shales and the Rough Rock at localities between Bramhope and Eldwick.

Saturday 11th May 2013 — Ingleton Waterfalls Walk

Leader: Dr Andrew M McCaig, Leeds University.


To examine the Ingleton Group, the oldest rocks in Yorkshire with flute casts and a mappable syncline axis, the unconformably overlying Carboniferous Limestone and a Terminal Moraine. We will also look at the hydrogeology, a dyke, quarrying and the Craven faults.

Saturday 15th June 2013 — Fauld Mine and Crater, Tutbury

Leader: Dr Noel Worley, Yorkshire Geological Society.


Within the upper part of the Triassic Mercia Mudstone Group, now called the Branscombe Mudstone Formation, are two developments of evaporites known as the Stafford Halite Evaporite Bed and the younger Tutbury Evaporite Bed or Tutbury Bed. The latter is composed of economically viable gypsum and anhydrite.

The purpose of the excursion is to examine the Tutbury Evaporite Bed underground in shallow room and pillar workings and afterwards at outcrop in the Fauld Quarry. We will then walk to the crater before walking to the church in Hanbury to look at alabaster grave ornaments. If time permits we will then drive to the church in Tutbury to look at the oldest recorded use of carved alabaster in the British Isles in the Norman west door.

The mines were used during the Second World War for the storage of munitions by the RAF and became the site of the world's largest non-nuclear man made explosion. The geology controlled the effects of the explosion and the remaining field evidence will be examined.

Sunday 14th July 2013   —   Bradford Building Stones

To explore the building stones used in Bradford, including the excellent local sandstones and the decorative stones used on shop fronts and open spaces.

Sunday 11th August 2013   —   Saltwick Bay to Whitby East, N Yorks

Leader: Dr Liam Herringshaw, Durham University.


The North Yorkshire coastal section between Saltwick Bay and Whitby East provides an excellent exposure of the Lower Jurassic Whitby Mudstone Formation. At low tide, the upper part of the famous Jet Rock is exposed at Saltwick, and then the walk towards Whitby takes you up through the Bituminous Shales, Hard Shales and Alum Shales, all exposed in a gentle syncline. This succession of organic-rich Jurassic mudstones has been of industrial and scientific interest for centuries, but is attracting renewed research attention because of the shale gas revolution. Additionally, new studies are showing that many of the paradigms of shale deposition - deep water, low energy, low oxygen - may be flawed. In the light of both of these, the trip will explore this well-exposed section of the Whitby Mudstone Formation and reassess the conditions under which it formed. We will also discuss its broader applicability to our understanding of shale systems.

Sunday 15th Sept 2013 — Localities on Geological Sheet 61: Pateley Bridge

Leader: Drs Richard Haslam and Oliver Wakefield, both of the British Geological Survey.


This may be the final summer that BGS will be out in the field re-surveying the Pateley Bridge Sheet which was last surveyed in 1889. They have kindly agreed to show us aspects of this work.

Morning: River Wharfe with Dr Richard Haslam (BGS)

In the morning we will walk along the River Wharfe upstream from Burnsall where we will look at the limestone sequences and structures. We will start with a discussion on the landscape taking an overview of one of the Cracoe Reef Knolls and the possible continuation of the Middle Craven Fault. We will then examine the possible relationship between deposition of the limestone and the structural evolution of the area. Finally we will explore the transition between the Malham Formation and Alston Formation and the distinguishing features between these formations.

Afternoon: Brimham Rocks with Dr Oliver Wakefield (BGS)

In the afternoon at Brimham Rocks there are exposed spectacular rock pinnacles that allow a three-dimensional insight into a complex ancient fluvio-deltaic system. This part of the field trip will focus on identifying and interpreting a series of sedimentary structures and relating them to a variety of depositional bedforms. The walk is on made footpaths, no more than 1km in length.
