Excursion Details
Sunday 11th May 2014 — Hetchell Wood, Scarcroft and Thorner

Leader: Bill Fraser, LGA.


To examine four separate outcrops which show that between 320 - 280 million years ago conditions in this part of West Yorkshire changed from a tropical river delta to a hot dry desert which then became inundated by shallow seas which were constantly evaporating.

This event was part of the programme for Yorkshire Geology Month 2014.

Sunday 15th June 2014 — Permo-Trias exposures, Nottingham

Leader: Dr Andy Howard & Keith Ambrose (both with the BGS).


To examine aspects of the Permo-Triassic sequence of the Nottingham area. At Clifton we will look at a series of excellent exposures of the Gunthorpe Member of the Sidmouth Mudstone of the Mercia Mudstone Group. We then look at the oldest Lenton Sandstone Formation (currently Permian but new research suggests it could be Triassic), the former Nottingham Castle Sandstone Formation (recently changed to the Chester Formation) in the Sherwood Sandstone Group at Castle Rock in Nottingham, on top of which is built Nottingham Castle, and also at Park Tunnel, constructed as an escape route from an area of Nottingham called The Park where a recluse once resided. A visit will be also be made to the City of Caves beneath Broadmarsh Shopping Centre to look at more exposures and caves carved out of the Sherwood Sandstone for use for various purposes in the past. Saturday 28th June 2014 — Glacial Features in Holderness

Leader: Prof Mark Bateman, Sheffield University & Dr Paul Buckland.


Dimlington is the British type site for the Last Glacial Maximum and the key internationally recognised site for constraining the timing and extent of the last British Icesheet. Originally it was interpreted that the sequence at this site of Skipsea and Withernsea Tills were deposited in a single event by a two tiered ice-sheet (Catt, 2007). More recent work has suggested these tills represent two different events (Bateman et al 2011). Whether these events are re-advances or ice marginal fluctuations is debated. The field visit will look at the cliff sections at the type site at Dimlington and compare it to what is thought to be an ice marginal site slightly inland on Holderness at Keyingham (an active quarry) as well as the Red Cliff moraine at Ferriby which was mapped by Bisat in 1932.

Saturday 19th July 2014   —   The Dent Marble Industry

Leader: Bill Fraser, LGA.


The purpose of the day is to walk to three sites that together illustrate some of the stratigraphical characteristics of the Wensleydale Group, the nature of the raw material for the Dent Marble industry and the working practices involved in its extraction. If time permits a brief visit can be made to the site of the Dent Marble works and associated industrial archaeological features. White Shaw Moss, Binks & High Pike quarries, all disused quarries at the head of Deepdale and mentioned in Bill's talk on 30th January 2014, will be visited.

Saturday 16th August 2014   —   North Lincolnshire

Leader: Paul Hildreth, Yorkshire Geological Society.


Examination of exhibits of Frodingham Ironstone with spectacular fossils on show at the Museum; Lower Jurassic Frodingham Ironstone in situ at Conesby Quarry; Rockstore offers opportunity to collect from the pile of ironstone kept for educational purposes; Middle Jurassic (shelf sea facies) of the Lincolnshire Limestone at Manton, quarry formerly used to extract cementstones for the highly prized Kirton Cement. This facies contrasts with the deltaic facies of the Middle Jurassic at Whitby (Saltwick Formation).

Saturday 6th Sept 2014 — Matlock and Wirksworth, Derbyshire

Leader: Dr Cathy Hollis, Manchester University.


The trip will focus upon the area around Matlock and Wirksworth and will provide the opportunity to review the facies encountered along the margin of the Derbyshire Platform with the Widmerpool Gulf, to the south. As well as examining a range of different shallow water carbonate facies, evidence for subaerial exposure and syn-depositional volcanism will be assessed. The role of faults in controlling both sedimentation and subsequent diagenesis will also be illustrated. In particular, the importance of pre-existing (Caledonian) basement faults on providing a conduit for fluids responsible for dolomitisation and mineralisation will be discussed.
