Space weather and geomagnetically induced currents
Space Weather encompasses a wide variety of physical phenomena that are ultimately driven by solar activity. The charged particles of the solar wind can disrupt satellite communications in space, create auroral displays, and interfere with telecommunications. At ground level, magnetic fluctuations induce electric currents that can impact power grids, pipelines, and railway operations. Understanding these physical processes and their impacts requires improving our knowledge of all aspects of these solar-terrestrial interactions, including the role played by subsurface geology. This talk will cover some recent multi-institutional work to better understand space weather risk in the UK.
Lecture given by Prof. John Mound, University of Leeds, School of Earth and Environment.
